Meet Mr. Qiang Li, the 2025 recipient of the Mark S. Wrighton Award for McDonnell Academy Alumni—an honor that recognizes alumni who exemplify global leadership, academic excellence, and a sustained commitment to the mission of the Academy.

Mr. Qiang Li, a member of the McDonnell Academy’s 2007 Cohort, earned his MBA from Olin Business School at WashU in 2009. He is the sole McDonnell Academy alumnus in the WashU China CEO Club and an active, dedicated member of the WashU China community. Mr. Li frequently engages with WashU students in both China and the United States at alumni events, serves as a trusted leader and mentor to his fellow McDonnell Scholars, and generously shares his insights and experiences to support the growth of others—contributing significantly to the enrichment of the community.

As CEO of Steve Madden in China, Mr. Li has been integral to the successful transformation of innovative concepts into reality, propelling Steve Madden’s global expansion while maintaining local relevance, which is crucial for sustainable success. Li’s greatest strength lies in his ability to lead through adversity. By swiftly adapting strategies and identifying emerging trends, he drove significant business growth during the global pandemic—while cultivating a team culture grounded in perseverance and resilience.

Mr. Li returned to St. Louis to accept the Mark S. Wrighton Alumni Award at the McDonnell Academy’s Annual Welcome Reception on August 21, 2025. He discussed the importance of seizing the opportunities provided by the McDonnell Academy and maintaining strong connections within both WashU and McDonnell Academy Alumni. His remarks underscored the value of community engagement, collaboration, and strategic networking in fostering professional growth and contributing positively to society.
